Zelenskyy Confirms Full Restoration of Starlink and Starshield Speeds for Ukrainian Forces

Ukrainian authorities report satellite network speeds exceeded 400 km/h following recent operational disruptions that affected drone logistics.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced on 24 October that the speed restrictions on the Starlink and Starshield satellite systems were lifted by morning. In a video address, he stated that the networks returned to the operational speeds they maintained before the limitations were placed on them. Zelenskyy thanked those who assisted in restoring communications to the necessary level for military use.

The president explained that speed recovery began overnight and reached the required threshold by the start of the day. He emphasized the importance of this development for frontline logistics and for the defense against jet-powered Shahed drones. Before his public statement, Ukrainian defence forces and Ministry of Defence experts had already recorded both systems functioning at speeds above 161 km/h. The Ministry of Defence subsequently issued an official confirmation, noting that it was registering speeds above 400 km/h and that the connection remained stable.

This announcement concludes a period of operational disruption. A few days prior, Zelenskyy reported that Starlink and Starshield equipment stopped working at speeds of 130 to 161 km/h in several sectors along the line of contact. He indicated that these limitations interfered with logistics and restricted Ukraine's capacity to deploy drones effectively. The technical constraints created a specific challenge for military operations during that interim period.

The restrictions also attracted political attention. On 16 October, US President Donald Trump claimed that the White House had not been involved in limiting Ukraine's use of the satellite system. This statement addressed questions regarding the origin of the bandwidth controls. The political dimension added context to the technical adjustments made to the network infrastructure.

Separate reporting provided additional context on the decision-making process. The Telegraph reported that SpaceX CEO Elon Musk approached Trump with the idea of restricting the bandwidth of the Starlink and Starshield networks used by the Ukrainian military. This interaction between the tech executive and the US president preceded the operational changes observed by Ukrainian forces.

The restoration of full speeds marks a return to pre-restriction performance metrics for the satellite networks. The Ministry of Defence confirmed the stability of the connection following the speed increase. The current operational status allows for the full range of logistical and defensive capabilities that were previously limited.

No further scheduled announcements were made regarding the long-term configuration of the satellite networks. The immediate focus remains on the confirmed restoration of speeds above 400 km/h. The situation reflects the resolved status of the bandwidth limitations that affected several sectors of the front line.
