Speed over 400: The threshold for Ukraine's restored satellite link

Defence officials confirmed that high-velocity drone systems can now maintain stable communications after a week of operational silence.

Ukraine's military has regained full access to its critical satellite communications network, effectively ending a week of operational silence that severely hampered drone strikes against Russian positions. The restoration marks a pivotal moment for the front lines, where reliable data links are essential for coordinating complex aerial attacks.

Defence Minister Yevhenii Khmara announced on Saturday that the Starlink and Starshield connections have stabilized. He noted that the signal remains robust even on equipment traveling at speeds exceeding 400 kilometers per hour. The minister attributed the resolution to productive discussions with Washington and the personal diplomatic efforts of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

The disruption has highlighted Ukraine's deep reliance on SpaceX for both command and control and offensive drone missions. While the exact origin of the access restrictions remains unexplained, US President Donald Trump has distanced himself from the decision while simultaneously defending Elon Musk. This ambiguity has further strained the already tense relationship between the two capitals.

Diplomatic friction intensified earlier this month when Trump suggested that Ukraine might benefit from new leadership. He later proposed that a different figure should handle negotiations on Kyiv's behalf. These comments followed a public disagreement between the leaders at the White House in February 2025, adding another layer of complexity to their working relationship.

The return of satellite service coincides with a renewed push for peace talks. Negotiators from the United States, Ukraine, and Russia are slated to meet in Abu Dhabi in early November. This will be the first significant diplomatic engagement of this scale since the full-scale invasion began in February 2022. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed the schedule on Friday, while Zelenskyy agreed to proceed with technical-level discussions.

Amid these diplomatic moves, Trump claimed that his wife, Melania, helped secure a local ceasefire in Oleshky, a town in the Kherson region that Russia has occupied since 2022. Subsequent statements from both sides indicated the truce would begin on October 27, with a humanitarian operation scheduled for October 29.

Combat operations continued during the communication gap. A missile strike on Lozova in the Kharkiv region killed one man and injured two others on Saturday. In the northern Chernihiv region, a Russian attack on Friday resulted in one death and at least 25 injuries. Meanwhile, Ukrainian forces targeted industrial sites inside Russia, including a petrochemical plant in Togliatti and an electronics facility in Oryol. Russian defense officials reported intercepting a large number of drones and missiles over the past day, though these figures have not been independently verified.
