Aston Villa defeated Manchester City 2-1 at Villa Park on Saturday, snapping the visitors' record seven-match winning streak in the Premier League. The loss marks the end of a perfect start for Manchester City under manager Enzo Maresca, who had become the first coach to win his first seven matches after taking over a new club. The result also extends City's struggles at this specific ground, where they have now lost in each of the last four seasons.
Nicolas Jackson scored both goals for the home side. The first came just six minutes into the match following a heavy touch from Manchester City defender Marc Guehi. Jackson cut inside defender Elliott Anderson and fired a high shot past goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma. Villa maintained their lead until the 52nd minute, when Erling Haaland headed in a cross from Iliman Ndiaye. That goal was Haaland's 13th in 10 appearances this season. Jackson restored the lead exactly on the hour mark, finishing low after a cross from Ibrahim Mbaye.
City dominated possession for much of the first half but faced resistance from Villa goalkeeper Zion Suzuki. The keeper denied shots from Ndiaye, Rayan Cherki, and Abdukodir Khusanov, while Ndiaye also struck the post. Despite the pressure, City failed to capitalize on two defensive errors that allowed Villa to take control of the game's key moments. Josko Gvardiol hit the crossbar with a fierce drive shortly after Haaland's equalizer, missing a chance to put City ahead.
The victory improves Villa's standing to sixth place in the league. It represents their sixth win in seven matches across all competitions. Manager Unai Emery has rebuilt the squad significantly over the past four years, transforming the club into a Champions League participant. This season's success has come despite losing six starters from last season's Europa League-winning team during the transfer window. New signings including Jackson, Suzuki, Mbaye, and Johan Manzambi have contributed immediately after a slow start to the campaign.
The result leaves Arsenal with the opportunity to level points with Manchester City at the top of the table if they defeat Everton at home later on Saturday. The defeat comes as City continues to navigate off-field challenges, specifically an appeal against a guilty verdict on over 100 charges of breaking financial rules between 2009 and 2018. Potential sanctions range from fines to relegation, though the players showed few on-pitch signs of distraction before the defensive mistakes proved decisive.
