Mbappe Chases Individual Glory in Trophyless 2025-26

Despite a season lacking silverware, the French striker relies on record-breaking goal totals and World Cup dominance to claim the premier individual football award.

Twenty-two goals in as many matches. That is the total Kylian Mbappe has amassed in World Cup history, a figure that places him above all previous players in the tournament’s record books. This statistic serves as the centerpiece of his campaign for the Ballon d’Or, an award that carries no monetary prize but significantly elevates a player’s market value and prestige.

The upcoming ceremony in London on Monday will determine the winner for the 2025-26 campaign. Mbappe enters the selection process without a team trophy at either the club or international level, a notable gap in a year defined by individual milestones rather than collective silverware. He is not currently the favorite according to betting odds, nor did he lead the scoring charts in every single competition last term, yet he believes his personal achievements are sufficient to secure the honor.

His most compelling case stems from the 2026 World Cup in North America. Mbappe claimed the Golden Boot for the second consecutive tournament, surpassing Lionel Messi, who stands second in the historical rankings with 21 goals, and Miroslav Klose, who is third with 16. The former PSG forward stated last month that overtaking legendary figures in the sport’s most significant competition is a standout achievement. When asked about his voting preference, he replied simply: “Myself.”

Club performance reinforced his individual credentials. Mbappe finished as the top scorer in La Liga with 25 goals and also led the scoring charts in the Champions League with 15 goals. He expressed confidence that this statistical dominance makes it a strong year for his candidacy, noting that his ability to perform individually and create memorable moments is what typically resonates with voters for such awards.

However, the absence of a team trophy remains a significant hurdle. Real Madrid endured a turbulent season, transitioning from manager Xabi Alonso to Alvaro Arbeloa. The club finished as runners-up in La Liga and were eliminated by Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarterfinals, marking a second consecutive year without a major title. On the international stage, France placed fourth in the World Cup, falling to Spain in the semifinals and England in the third-place match.

His main rivals have stronger trophy cases. Lamine Yamal won the World Cup with Spain and the domestic league title with Barcelona. Harry Kane of Bayern Munich also collected three trophies, including the Bundesliga championship. Despite these comparisons, Mbappe remains focused on the individual nature of the prize. He told radio station RFI that the envelope will contain a player’s name, not a team’s, emphasizing that individual brilliance is the key metric for this specific award.

Jose Mourinho, who managed Mbappe during the season, also voiced support for his former player. The manager highlighted that the player who made history this summer is neither from Paris Saint-Germain nor the Spanish national team, implicitly pointing to Mbappe’s achievements.

Historical patterns suggest the odds are not in Mbappe’s favor. Over the last decade, every Ballon d’Or winner has secured at least one major trophy in the relevant period. Ousmane Dembele won the prize in 2025 after helping Paris Saint-Germain claim their first Champions League title. Rodri, the previous winner, took home Euro 2024 with Spain and the Premier League with Manchester City. The last player to win without a major team trophy was Cristiano Ronaldo in 2013, who ended Lionel Messi’s four-year streak with 66 goals while Real Madrid finished second in the league and Portugal failed to advance past the World Cup playoffs.

Given that precedent, Mbappe retains a slim but viable chance. He has been nominated nine times and finished third in 2023. Many observers argue that after a career defined by individual excellence, his moment to claim the top individual honor is long overdue.
