The West Bank is under a tight military grip following a deadly incident that has triggered widespread raids and evacuations. Israeli forces have locked down Hebron, forcing thousands of Palestinians from their homes while conducting operations across the region after two Israeli soldiers were killed.
Local authorities confirm that 2,200 people have been displaced from their residences in Hebron. Mayor Yousef al-Ja'bari stated that hundreds of raids have occurred since Friday, when two Palestinian gunmen attacked an Israeli army reserve base. Both attackers and the two soldiers involved in the clash were killed during the incident.
Residents report that evacuation orders were announced over loudspeakers late at night, leaving families with little time to prepare or find alternative shelter. Al-Ja'bari noted that on Saturday, the city was completely sealed, preventing people from entering or exiting. This strict closure has isolated the population and limited movement within the urban center.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered a full lockdown of the West Bank in response to the attack. During an operation near the Farsh al-Hawa checkpoint, soldiers targeted journalists documenting the bulldozing of homes and vehicles by firing a stun grenade. Correspondents reported raids in at least 15 areas on Saturday, including Jenin, Nablus, Ramallah, Al-Bireh, Birzeit, East Jerusalem, and Bethlehem.
The Palestinian Prisoners' Society reported that approximately 70 Palestinians were arrested during these widespread operations. The Palestinian Authority, which governs the West Bank, described the military actions as collective punishment. Officials cited home demolitions, forced displacement, and the siege of cities as key issues, urging the international community to intervene. Hamas also issued a statement, claiming that escalations by the occupation and settlers will fuel further outrage among the population.
Hebron is the most populous governorate in the West Bank, home to 200,000 people within the city limits and 600,000 in the surrounding areas. Issa Amro, a local activist and analyst, explained that these 800,000 residents are currently under siege with all entrances and exits closed since morning. He emphasized that there is no safe place to hide inside the city, describing the atmosphere as one of deep fear.
These developments occur just days before Israeli parliamentary elections scheduled for October 27. Correspondent Nour Odeh noted that Israeli politicians are attempting to capitalize on the attack. She observed that Netanyahu, the Likud party, and their right-wing coalition allies are trailing in the polls and are projecting strength by emphasizing their efforts to combat Palestinian forces. Netanyahu recently avoided confirming whether he intends to dismantle the Palestinian Authority, stating instead that a big surprise awaits the organization.
The situation remains fluid as the military continues its operations. The combination of the imminent elections and the recent violence has heightened tensions in the region. Residents and officials continue to monitor the situation closely, awaiting further announcements from both the Israeli government and the Palestinian Authority regarding the duration of the lockdown and the scope of future actions.
