Foldable Debut: iPhone Duo Arrives With Strict Retail Limits

Apple customers faced early lines and scarce inventory as the first foldable iPhone launched in stores worldwide this Friday.

For shoppers hoping to secure a new device today, the arrival of the iPhone Duo came with immediate logistical hurdles. While the first foldable iPhone is now available, walk-in customers at Apple locations encountered significant barriers to purchase. The company had warned of constrained stock, a reality that became apparent as lines began forming well before opening hours. Those who did not secure a unit during the initial rush are now being directed to digital channels for better odds of finding inventory.

Apple has officially launched the iPhone Duo at stores around the world, marking a significant milestone for the brand. In a statement released this morning, the company highlighted the global enthusiasm for the new hardware. Team members at various locations provided hands-on demonstrations and personalized assistance to help customers understand the new foldable form factor. The debut was treated as a major event, with employees actively engaging with the crowd to showcase the device’s features.

Company leadership joined the celebration at key flagship locations to mark the occasion. Greg Joswiak, Apple’s senior vice president of worldwide marketing, was present at the flagship store on Fifth Avenue in New York. He was accompanied by retail executive Vanessa Trigub. Meanwhile, CEO John Ternus celebrated the launch in Austin, Texas, at the Domain NORTHSIDE location. He was joined there by retail chief Deirdre O’Brien. Reports indicate that Ternus also toured the company’s Austin offices earlier this week.

The launch in Austin coincided with a major sporting event that may have boosted local foot traffic. The Formula 1 United States Grand Prix is taking place in the city this weekend. Apple holds the exclusive rights to stream F1 races in the United States, creating a dual focus on both its hardware release and its media streaming capabilities. This alignment highlights the company’s broader strategy of integrating its technology ecosystem with major entertainment events.

Inventory challenges defined the shopping experience for many visitors. Apple had explicitly cautioned that retail stock would be limited, and those warnings proved accurate. As disappointed shoppers left empty-handed, store workers advised them to check the Apple Store app at 10 a.m. Eastern Time tomorrow. This digital window will provide specific details on in-store availability, allowing customers to plan their next visit more effectively.

The launch day served as a worldwide test of demand for Apple’s first foldable smartphone. While the initial in-store experience was marked by high energy and active demonstrations, the scarcity of units required a quick pivot to digital tools for inventory management. Customers who managed to purchase the device today are now part of the first wave of users for this new category, while others await the next opportunity to secure one through the app.
