Police on the Bahamian island of Bimini have opened a sudden death investigation after a 36-year-old British woman drowned while trying to reach her two sons in a strong current. The Royal Bahamas Police Force identified the woman as believed to be from Stapleford in Nottinghamshire.
The Royal Bahamas Police Force said the woman was snorkeling with her husband and two sons near the island's southern point when a strong current carried both children away. The woman was swept from the site as she moved to reach them. The boys were later pulled from the water.
Shortly after 10am, officers at the Alice Town police station were alerted that an unresponsive woman lay at the North Bimini Ferry Dock. Responding officers learned she had been moved to a local clinic. A doctor there pronounced her dead after efforts to save her life. Police said she had been rescued from the water and taken to the ferry dock, where CPR was administered.
The force said foul play is not suspected at this time. An autopsy will be carried out to establish the cause of death. A Foreign Office spokesperson said officials are in contact with local authorities and providing support to the family.
