Apple Ramps Up iPhone Duo Production

New supply chain data reveals a significant boost in manufacturing targets for Apple's first folding device amid surging pre-order activity.

Apple has sharply increased production for its new folding iPhone.

Recent information from supply chain sources indicates Apple has raised its shipment targets for the device by more than 40%. The company has adjusted its projection from an initial goal of 9.7 million units to 14 million units for the first 12 months following launch. This move follows a surge in consumer interest that began the moment pre-orders became available on Friday.

The pre-order period for the new device, named the iPhone Duo, began on a Friday. Within approximately one minute of the window opening, customers reported seeing delivery dates pushed into late January. This rapid shift in availability raised questions about whether Apple could meet the initial wave of orders. At the time, Apple described the situation as reflecting what it called “extraordinary” demand for its first folding iPhone. The company also placed a limit of two units per customer to discourage scalping.

The recent reports on increased manufacturing capacity suggest the initial delays were driven by high demand rather than insufficient supply. Some customers who had been given later shipping estimates have since received notifications that their orders will arrive sooner than first anticipated. The company continues to anticipate strong demand for the new device over the coming year.

Early users of the iPhone Duo have encountered some issues with third-party applications. Many apps have not yet been optimized for the device's unique form factor. Apple has stated that the situation is improving as more developers work to update their software for the new screen size and layout.

Reviews based on the first week of usage have highlighted several key points, with app support being one of the primary concerns. Another issue noted by reviewers was the decision to use Touch ID for authentication instead of Face ID. This feature was included in the initial version of the device.

In response to feedback, Apple is already moving forward with future hardware. Reports indicate the company is currently testing prototypes for a second version of the iPhone Duo. These test units are equipped with Face ID, addressing one of the main points of criticism from early reviewers.

The increased production targets are aimed at fulfilling the large number of pre-orders and meeting the continued demand for the new device. The first shipment window for pre-orders is set to begin in the coming weeks. Customers who were unable to secure a device during the initial pre-order period will need to wait for later availability.
