A $965 Billion Valuation Reshapes the Wealth of Anthropic Backers
Early investors and late-stage firms have seen their stakes in the AI firm grow to billions as it prepares for a potential two-trillion-dollar public listing.

For the investors who helped build one of the world's leading artificial intelligence companies, the current financial landscape has already delivered substantial returns. Although Anthropic has not yet gone public, its latest private market valuation of $965 billion means that early backers and major venture capital firms are holding assets worth billions of dollars. This surge in value is occurring ahead of an anticipated public listing this year, which could push the company's worth as high as $2 trillion. For ordinary observers in the Great Lakes and Ohio Valley regions, this growth underscores the rapid maturation of the AI sector and the significant wealth concentration among those who supported the technology in its earliest days.
The financial gains vary significantly depending on when each investor entered the market. Eric Schmidt, the former CEO of Google, is among the earliest beneficiaries of this growth. According to PitchBook data, he participated in the company's Series A round in 2021 when the startup was valued at $461 million. His initial position has since expanded to approximately one percent of the company. At the current private valuation, Schmidt's stake is worth nearly $10 billion, demonstrating the explosive nature of early-stage AI investments.
Later-stage investors have also secured massive positions, though their entry points were at higher valuations. Iconiq, an investment firm, wrote a $6 billion check to Anthropic last year when the company was already valued at $183 billion. This late-stage bet has grown to a value of $17 billion. There is a possibility that this figure could double once the initial public offering is completed. Similarly, Menlo Ventures, which led the company's Series D round, has invested more than $1 billion over time. That cumulative investment is now valued at $14 billion, reflecting the sustained confidence of the firm in the AI lab's trajectory.
More recent entrants into the company's capital structure have also realized significant appreciation. Sequoia, a prominent venture capital firm, first backed Anthropic earlier this year when the company's valuation stood at $380 billion. By investing $3 billion, Sequoia secured about one percent ownership. Despite the high entry price, the firm's investment has already more than doubled, highlighting the continued momentum in the sector. This rapid growth in value provides a benchmark for how quickly assets in the AI space can revalue within a single year.
Other notable participants in Anthropic's funding rounds include Sound Ventures and Spark Capital. Sound Ventures, a firm launched by Guy Oseary and actor Ashton Kutcher, initially invested $35 million in the 2023 Series C round. The firm subsequently added another $400 million to its stake, resulting in a position worth billions. It is worth noting that Kutcher departed from Sound Ventures this year to launch a new venture capital firm, but the investment remains a key part of the company's cap table. His departure marks a shift in the firm's leadership structure but does not change the underlying value of the assets held.
Spark Capital holds a distinct position as the only venture capital firm known to have a board seat at Anthropic. The firm invested $75 million in the same 2023 Series C round, when the company was valued at $5 billion. That initial position has since grown more than ninetyfold, reaching a value of $7 billion. This extraordinary multiple on investment illustrates the potential for early participants to see exponential growth in the AI industry. The presence of such a high-growth asset in a board member's portfolio adds a layer of financial alignment between the company's strategic direction and its investor base.
The context of these valuations is set against the backdrop of a potential IPO that could reach $2 trillion. This target valuation would represent a significant leap from the current $965 billion mark. For the investors listed above, the public listing is expected to be a major windfall, further cementing their status as key players in the AI economy. As the company moves closer to the public markets, the transparency of these valuations will likely increase, providing more clarity to the broader market regarding the true worth of leading AI labs. The outlook remains one of strong growth, with the current private valuations serving as a baseline for what may yet come.
